BEE #143: Beyond the Scale: Why Weight Doesn't Tell Your Whole Health Story

After experiencing a serious car accident and learning I was pre-diabetic despite maintaining a normal weight, I was forced to reevaluate everything I believed about nutrition and health. For years, I coached clients through emotional eating under the assumption that moderation and stable weight were enough. But my own health journey revealed the limitations of that thinking—our bodies often signal imbalances long before the scale does. This wake-up call pushed me to dive deeper into how food affects us beyond weight, especially as we age.

As a result, The Breakthrough Emotional Eating Podcast is expanding in scope. While emotional eating remains at the heart of what we do, we’ll now explore personalized nutrition with insights from a range of experts in health and fitness. This isn’t about rigid rules or food restrictions—it’s about tuning into your unique biochemistry and learning what truly supports your energy, vitality, and well-being. Whether you're navigating emotional eating, low energy, or seeking a more intuitive approach to food, this new chapter is for you. Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Breakthrough Emotional Eating Podcast. My name is Kristen Jones and thank you so much for joining me this week. Name is Kristen Jones and thank you so much for joining me this week. It has been more than a hot minute since I have recorded a podcast episode and I wanted to update everybody on some things that have been going on and some changes that have been happening, not only in my life but in my business. So welcome, and we still are going to be talking about emotional eating. Emotional eating is still the mainstay of what I will be discussing, but I've kind of changed a little bit in regards to my viewpoint on food, so, and I will explain a little bit more about that. So let me backtrack a little bit For those of you who have been listening for a while and who listened to my last few episodes.

Speaker 1:

I was in a pretty significant car accident in January and as a result of that accident, I had already started hormone replacement therapy a week prior to being in this accident and the accident really put the podcast on hold. I did a couple more episodes after the accident, but life was just really hard. I had a very hard time staying focused and just staying committed to anything. I don't know if it was a result of the accident I did not have any sort of head trauma per se but I did feel that I just had lost a lot of motivation and a lot of drive to complete things, and I'm sure many of you can relate to that. Sometimes, when we have these significant traumatic experiences, those things can happen, and that was absolutely what happened. And so my business continued on, and one of the areas that I have really been focusing on is the hypnosis aspect of my business, and I am such a firm advocate and believer in the power of hypnosis and the power of rapid transformational therapy, which is the process that I take people through, and hypnosis is a part of that and I have really been doing a lot of focusing on that aspect of my business and it's been incredibly successful and I'm really, really pleased with it.

Speaker 1:

But through the course of going through hormone replacement therapy and just kind of getting my life back together and being able to actually get back to being physical and being present in my own body because I had an almost three-month recovery from the airbag injury that I sustained in my accident and it took a long time for me to feel air quotes normal, and so that process has been a very different thing for me and it's really forced me to become very much very in touch with my body and present in my own body. And one of the things that I have really realized is that the way I had been eating and the way I've been advocating people to eat which I still think isn't a bad thing still think isn't a bad thing. So let me clarify that it's not that I don't still advocate that people need to eat what they enjoy eating. I just think there is a level of awareness of of proper nutrition and, especially as we get older, and I think one of the things and I will never, ever say not to eat a certain food group, like to not eat sugar or to not eat carbs. That's never going to be my belief, but it is. As we get older and as our bodies start to respond to different things, we absolutely have to be aware of the impact that food has on our bodies. And so the reason I feel, the reason I've kind of changed this and I've been changing the way I've been eating and I've noticed a significant difference, is that when I went in for my initial check and I had my blood work done for my hormone replacement therapy and I relayed this in my HRT podcast I learned that my A1c was pre-diabetic.

Speaker 1:

I was just at the beginning of the pre-diabetic range, it was 5.8. And I was shocked, because I am of normal weight. I would not think that I would be pre-diabetic based upon my weight, because I always thought of diabetic or pre-diabetic based upon my weight, because I always thought of pre of diabetic or pre-diabetic as being related to weight. And it absolutely, it absolutely is not. That is not the truth. Um, because, uh, but I have to be honest and tell you, know and be totally transparent, that I really ran with the idea that, oh, you could eat it and you can eat anything you want, as long as it's in moderation.

Speaker 1:

And to me, I always thought as long as my weight doesn't go up, everything's great. Well, my weight doesn't change, but I was eating a lot. If I'm honest, I was eating a lot of sugar and eating a lot of sweets and justifying it because my weight wasn't going up. And so when I went and saw my doctor and he told me that I was pre-diabetic, I was shocked and I said well, why am I not 100 pounds heavier than I am? And I just happened to be blessed with a really great thyroid that really helps me process. I process and use everything that I eat. So that's a good thing and a bad thing, because I've gone all this time thinking, well, there's nothing wrong, everything's super healthy, because my weight hasn't changed. But the reality is, my body and my blood and my insulin and my pancreas are not liking what's happening.

Speaker 1:

So I've had to really make some changes for health reasons and I'll be completely honest, I feel so much better. I have so much more energy. I have really been focusing on eating protein and eating red meat as well as pork. I've eaten chicken all my life. I'm done, I'm tired of chicken. I eat mostly red meat and pork and I love it and I'm really feeling like I have so much more energy and I'm not ever going to advocate any style of eating one way or the other, but I really want my coaching to now go in more of a direction of really helping people figure out what foods make them feel good and what foods give them energy, and then incorporate those things in a way that still allows you to enjoy and pick the foods that you want to eat, but have a health framework to be able to gauge and judge and decide what it is that you want to be eating and what you want to be putting into your body.

Speaker 1:

So just a tiny shift of direction. And it is focusing on foods that make us feel good and and foods that make us good, feel good for the long run and that impact our health, and I think that's to me that's the real change in direction is really focusing on each individual's health and what's going to be best for them and what's going to feel good and what's going to give you energy and help you live your best life, not only from a physical standpoint, but also from a biological standpoint and from a physiological standpoint and a health standpoint, and your heart and your you know all of the things that we're so in now that you know, and I think it happens as we get older that we vanity kind of goes vanity takes a back seat to. I want to be my healthiest, I want to be giving my body the things that it actually needs, and so that's kind of going to kind of be the direction of my podcast, and I definitely am going to be seeking out experts and people that I know and love and trust and have them come on and share their stories about with their health journeys and how they've discovered what works for them, and not advocating and saying, oh you need to do this, but just exposing my audience to there's so many different varieties of ways of looking at things and I have so many friends in the fitness industry who do a variety of different things and I really want to be able to spotlight them and highlight them and highlight what they do because they're so knowledgeable, and also let my audience then decide okay, what is it that you want? And then be able to help facilitate that within my coaching practice and incorporate the hypnosis into that as well. So that's kind of the direction that we're going in, so I just wanted to make this a quick, short little podcast episode, but know that new episodes are on the way and I am so excited to get back into a regular of recording podcasts.

Speaker 1:

One other thing, one other change. I am choosing to move completely off. I will not. I will not be running my Facebook group anymore. I also had temporarily opened up a school group and I will not be running that group at all anymore, and I'm going exclusively through Instagram and just working with followers on Instagram, and so, if you don't follow me on Instagram, my Instagram is at Breakthrough Emotional Eating, and that may be changing as well. I'm not sure I may change my handle on Instagram, but at Breakthrough Emotional Eating has been very appropriate, but I do want to make sure that I am exposing myself to as many people as possible and the variety of things that I do as well.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, for right now, though, at Breakthrough Emotional Eating on Instagram, all one word, and I hope to see you as a follower and, again, keep listening to the podcast. I am so excited to have so many amazing guests and to interact with so many more people and to just have an amazing array of information and health information and, you know, personal development information that each person can use in their own way to help you live your best life, because really that's what we're all trying to do is just live our best lives. So thank you so much for listening to this episode and I hope to see you and see you and hear you listening to my next episodes as they come out. Again, thank you for being a follower, thank you for listening and I will see you in the next episode, take care. Thank you for listening to this week's episode.
